I like nearly everything about this vacuum. It works well on carpet, seems to be built well, and has a smallish powerhead (12″), which works well in tights spots.
The one glaring omission: A standard “floor nozzle.” You can turn off the brush on the powerhead, but it doesn’t work well for the tight spots, edges, etc., like a floor nozzle would. Normally this would be no huge deal–I’d just use a floor nozzle from another vacuum. But other tools don’t fit the Sanyo’s nonstandard attachment size. And according to Sanyo’s customer service, they do not make a floor nozzle to fit this unit.
This is easily THE BEST vacuum that I’ve ever personally owned. It is very powerful for it’s class (12A) & has many very logical features that make the chore of vacuuming really fun. (Yes, when you can get a 16-, 9-, & 2-yr ancient to volunteer & want to vacuum – it MUST be fun!!)
I would use the term ‘innovative’, but that’s really not quite right & it gets thrown around WAY more than it ever should.
But what Sanyo HAS done is make a sensible, intelligent vacuum with many well-thought-out features. They OBVIOUSLY have listened to their customers & designed a vacuum that is about as close to perfection as I’ve personally come across – and at a price MUCH lower than I would expect from such a unit.
Some of the stand-out features are (in no particular order, just my mind rambling…):
1) Power – We previously had a 12A DD Upright that pales next to this, & we spent A LOT MORE FOR IT! The most amusing thing is that we had used this vacuum a couple of times, commenting that the power was so much better than the DD vacuum – THEN we realized that we hadn’t even turned on the PowerHead Brush yet! So basically, everything was being picked up by pure suction alone as the spinning brush wasn’t engaged.
After we really started engaging the brush, we were even more impressed! (Yes, we are a bit dense at times…)
2) Nice, Huge, Simple to find buttons – No searching & fumbling for the On/Off switch or the Cord Retract button! Also, it is simple to switch from ‘Rug’ to ‘Floor’ by simply tapping the large foot button on the head.
3) Lightweight & Simple to roll around – Has 2 Large Rear Wheels for pivoting with 2 Front Caster Wheels to make this simple to navigate around. Regarding the weight, not a lot of explanation needed – it’s very light.
4) VERY Simple to empty the bagless canister – just carry it to the trash, push the release button, & the bottom drops open to dump the dirt, etc.
And another nice feature is that there is a knob on top to spin/turn the interior filter to FULLY get rid of the dust collected.
5) PowerHead Auto-Stop – the PowerHead will automatically stop spinning if lifted off of the floor. Perfect if you happen to get caught on a carpet or other string – just lift the head & the Brush stops.
(Granted, I can’t vacuum the cats anymore, but I’ll find something to do the job…)
6) Canister Auto-Stop – the entire unit turns itself off when the canister is about 2/3′s full. Very nice in that you don’t have to remember to empty the bin – it lets you know itself.
7) Pretty Darn Silent – I nearly forgot one of the first things that we noticed – it is very silent, all things considered. Granted, it DOES make some noise, but my wife & I can carry on a conversation while vacuuming WITHOUT having to yell or shut-down the unit. Not something that we normally do (simultaneously chat & vacuum, that is), but in a house with children, there are always questions to be questioned…
Granted, the above lengths are laid out flat whereas it’s not the same when you are vacuuming, but you can still figure around a 25′ range.
There is only 1 thing that is not Absolutely Stellar about this vacuum:
1) The Hanger – there is a Hanger so that you can hook the Head onto the Body for storage, but it seems to be a bit ‘less-than-sufficient’ for my taste. If Sanyo had used (at least) a metal alloy instead of plastic, I reckon that it would have been much better.
But honestly, the whole unit stores VERY nicely on it’s own in a closet so the Hanger isn’t even necessary. The ONLY time that the Hanger would be needed is if the storage area has no walls to lean against (ie. if you are storing the vacuum in an open field!)
Beyond that, Sanyo has made the (near) perfect vacuum.
And, as the title of this review has indicated – we loved this vacuum so much that after about 4 days of use, we seriously DID buy a 2nd!!
(Experience has taught me that something truly excellent will soon be discontinued, never to be seen again…)
I’m sure that other users will have different experiences (& opinions) of Sanyo’s contribution, but we have only had positive things to say about the SC-X1000P thus far.
I hope that this has helped you make a choice…
I don’t know if the other people who reviewed this really took it out of the box and plugged it in. I found this vacuum VERY EASY to use and the safty switch is a plus. Any vacumm that offers a safety to preven you sucking up unwanted items is a HUGE PLUS. Fantastic power… GREAT VACUUM.
I bought it because I needed a HEPA type vacuum for my house because of my cats. This product states that it is a “HEPA” type filter and may not be officially a HEPA filter, but it still does a fantastic job. I really delight in not having to buy bags anymore.
First issue is that is works fantastic and I like using it but it still has some design issues that need improvement. First the cord is too small, it needs to be 28 feet long instead of 18. Second the hose itself should be a small longer, it would probably be fantastic for apartments and condos but for a full-size house it’s a small small (like going up stairs). Third it needs a foot operated quick-disconnect for the power head. Also the entire vacuum should be operated from the wand (on/off) not separately on the unit itself and the wand. As for the small on-off switch that everyone is complaining about, simply duct tape it in place or rewire it. Simply pop off the cover, snip the black and white wires and then twist them together and the problem goes away.
For what I paid ($150.00 shipped to my door) there’ nothing on the market that’s close. It’s a very well designed Japanese product that is manufactured in China (hence the low price).
I wasn’t going to spend over $500.00 for a Dyson and I’m glad I didn’t, read their reviews and make your own choice.
David White – Seattle
1) Outstanding Suction(it will do an outstanding job of cleaning your rugs and floor of dirt and dog hairs(I don’t know how the other reviewer said that they had problem removing dog hairs???)
2) Very high quality construction
3) Simple to use and very simple to empty canister
4) honestly silent
5) My only complaint is that the power cord is too small but I can easily overlook that problem because the rest of the Vacuum has so many positives.
I am certainly glad I bought this vacuum. I really don’t know by anyone would spend 4 times as much for a Dyson(They do look rather cheap. I wonder how long they will hold up?)
